Many people confuse effect and affect in writing, including native speakers.
What is the difference between 'Effect' and 'Affect'?
Effect = A noun
Effect is a noun which means the result or outcome of something.
Sentence examples:
- One of the effects of a good diet is a healthy body.
- Doing voluntary work can have a positive effect on your mental health
💡Top Tip
If a ‘determiner’ is used (the effect/an effect /many effects /some effects/etc.), then you know you will need to use ‘effect’ which is a noun, and not ‘affect’ which is a verb.
Affect = A verb
When something changes or has an influence on something we use the verb ‘affect’.
- Having a good diet affects our body and can make it healthy.
- Doing voluntary work can affect your mental health positively.
